So I made it to the end of Week 1. I almost caved on Saturday and ran to the LCBO when someone sent me this: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/style/this-month-im-abstaining-from-abstinence/article1424137/. I'm so easily swayed, but thanks to a ton of texts from encouraging friends, I abstained! Even at a group lunch on Sunday where friends were drinking, I abstained!
I so far feel none of the glorious I-can't-wait-to-get-out-of-bed, my-skin-and-hair-are-glorious, I've-never-had-more-energy moments, mostly I'm hungry and slightly headachy. Not sure if it's the lack of caffeine, but every day I develop a slight headache. Not enjoyable. Hopefully this will pass, I'd really rather experience all the positive effects everyone raves about.
Two more weeks til a glass of wine :)

Day 4
Today sucks. Hard. Seriously. I feel cranky and hungry and would love nothing more than a great big glass of wine and bowl of pasta! Not feeling inspired to make anything for dinner. This could be tricky....

Days 2 + 3
So yesterday I woke up feeling like death - worst.headache.ever. It felt like a terrible, terrible hangover. Not sure how Joshi feels about ibuprofen, but too fucking bad, it had to be done! Still, I didn't cheat, no coffee, no junk. It was leftovers for lunch and leftovers for dinner with almonds and tea in between.
Today was a gym day which means I'm typically extra hungry so pre-gym I scarfed back a green salad with chickpeas, feta, broccoli, onion, and olive oil. Not the most delicious thing I ever ate, but not too bad. Then leftover dal with chicken after the gym.
I got home from work with a MASSIVE craving for a glass of red wine but I've held out. I can do it!
Apart from the wine, one of the things I'll crave (especially in this weather) is pho, so tonight I improvised a "faux pho" and was pleasantly surprised with the result!
Here's what I did...
In a large pot I combined the following ingredients:
6 cups of organic chicken broth
A tablespoon of ginger
Half a yellow onion, thinly sliced
Half a lime, halfed and thrown in
Small handful of basil
Small handful of cilantro
Even smaller handful of mint
1 red bird chili for a bit of heat
A tiiiiny dash of Braggs for a touch of salt
2 baby bok choy cut in half
A small handful of broccoli
Chicken (but could use tofu)
I let the ginger, onions broth and herbs stew together for awhile, then added the chicken and let it cook thoroughly, then added the veg at the end. In a separate pot I cooked the rice noodles and added them to the soup once cooked. C'est tout!
On to Day 4!

Day 1
So since I've been actually going to the gym, I've kicked around the idea of seeing a dietician/nutritionist to make sure I'm not undoing all my hard work and adding to my foodbabymuffintop. In searching for a referral my friend Jill mentioned a detox she's done, with great success, called The Joshi Holistic Detox - since buying a $20 book was the cheaper option, I decided to give it a whirl.
The basic premise is that for 21 days (I predict long and torturous ones at that) you'll give your body a break from all the usual crap we ingest to bring your system from an acidic to more alkaline state. So no red meat, dairy, wheat/gluten, caffeine or fruit. Now most of those don't pose much of an issue for me, but let's be real, I haven't gone 7 days without drinking in my adult life, let alone 21 so this should be interesting (and a much needed break for the old liver).
I ate and drank everything I might have a craving for to temper my cravings over the next 21 days - Sheba, pho, a burger+beer dinner, wine, chips and more. And so, for the next 21 days, rather than taking people's heads off and rocking back and forth with withdrawl in my office, I figured I vent through words.
So here I am on Day 1. The people (the thousands of others who've tried this detox and share their experiences via forums) tell me I will be cranky and light-headed for the next 3 days. So far, I'm just hungry. I struggled to get out of bed this am and so missed the recommended banana smoothie and instead had gluten-free cornflakes with rice milk, room temperature water with lemon and a green tea. Not bad. The cornflakes were actually tasty and not the dry, hamster cage wood chips I'd anticipated.
In preparation for Day 1 I made a delicious curry dahl for lunch today which I'll eat with brown rice. (As an aside, finding brown rice in a food court is easier said than done). The dahl recipe is from the new Michael Smith cookbook (thanks Paula) and is quick and delicious, even without meat. But first, the gym!
It`s 10pm and I made it through Day 1! Still slightly hungry, but I`ll manage. After another $70 grocery run, I should have enough dinner items and snacks to last awhile. Just made chicken with lemon caper sauce with spinach, carrots and brown rice, which actually turned out for once.
Off to bed now. Let`s see how tomorrow goes!
